Program Information

A: The sport of judo has been in existence since 1882. Judo's popularity has spread throughout the world, and it is the 2nd most popular sport worldwide (behind Soccer). It is an official sport in the Olympics, World Games, and Pan-American Games. Judo tournaments are also held on National, State, and Local levels.  The Judo program we conduct is technically called Kodokan Judo. The founder of the modern sport judo is Dr. Jigoro Kano. Dr. Kano formulated the sport from the Martial Art, Ju-Jitsu (a combination of Judo & Karate techniques).

A: New students should wear a long sleeved sweatshirt and sweatpants. Any student wishing to purchase a judo "GI" should do so at their convenience. The uniform may be purchased from the instructor.

A: During the first semester, students will be taught the background of judo, courtesies, and proper judo etiquette. Proper safety techniques will also be taught. These include: falling techniques, body movement, fundamentals of throwing, and ground-work skills. These skills will be reviewed each lesson. Every student is warmed-up prior to starting any strenuous activity. The student is encouraged to do these exercises at home.

A: Any student going for promotion will have to pay a $20.00 fee per promotion. You will receive a new belt and rank certificate. This is a separate charge from the registration fee. All fees are payable to the instructor, and will only be made after the student has passed their exam.

A: The class is not a baby-sitting service. Parents are encouraged to take their children to local tournaments and to cheer them on. The instructor will give out all notices.
